About Our Projects

When you buy carbon offsets, you fund projects that reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

ice sheets We currently have six types of projects in our growing portfolio--each uses a different strategy to reach the same goal.
  • Energy Efficiency: Most forms of energy in use today release carbon dioxide. These include oil, natural gas and coal. When we reduce our use of these fuels we lower our carbon emissions.
  • Renewable Energy: Renewable energy sources like wind power do not contribute to climate change. By supporting their development we lessen the demand for energy from sources that do release carbon dioxide.
  • Carbon Sequestration: Sequestration means “capture” and “removal.” Projects that sequester carbon both remove it from the atmosphere and hold it in a place where it cannot affect the climate. Trees are a good example of this process.
  • Cogeneration: Cogeneration means putting energy to use that would otherwise go to waste. Usually this happens when an electricity plant uses waste products like steam or heat to do other work, like run a motor. Cogeneration is an energy two-for-one!
  • Material Substitution: Making some materials, like cement, is a very energy-intensive process. When other, less energy-intensive materials can be used in their place, we save energy and reduce emissions.
  • Transportation Efficiency: Americans use a lot of energy moving people and things. In fact, transportation accounts for almost one-third of all our energy use. There are many things we can do to decrease these emissions.

Offsets make great gifts!

Where Your Money Goes

Offset purchases cover direct payments to project owners, sponsors, and developers, as well as maintenance and development of this program. About 92% of all funds received by The Climate Trust goes towards offset programs. Learn more about The Climate Trust's work.
